Jantar Mantar, Delhi: Medical students who were evacuated from war-torn Ukraine went on a hunger strike on Sunday demanding that they should be given admission to the country’s medical colleges as a one-time measure.

More than 350 students turned up at the protest out of which 35 students from Delhi, U.P, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan sat on a hunger strike from 10 AM to 5 PM stated RB Gupta, Parents Association of Ukraine Medical Students (PAUMS).

PAUMS has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in regards to accommodating the medical students into Government Medical colleges. In the letter, the medical students urged that out of 16000 (approximate) returnees, around 3000 students are in their final year, for whom the NMC has permitted that they can complete their internship in India. However, the rest 12000 students need to be accommodated in 606 medical colleges in India i.e., 20-21 students have to be accommodated in each college. A PIL (Public Interest Litigation) was filed in the Supreme Court in March, seeking directions on the same issue.
